EMPLOYEES’ INNOVATION BEHAVIOR - The Role of External Information Awareness and Proactiveness of Innovation Strategy

Abstract: Employees’ innovation behavior (IB), which involves developing, promoting, judging, distributing and implementing new ideas, is the foundation for knowledge creation and diffusion in organizations. Therefore, it is important to encourage employees’ IB in knowledge management initiatives. To better understand IB, this study applies the theory of planned behavior (TPB). Employees’ attitude towards innovation, subjective norm about innovation, and perceived behavioral control to innovation are expected to influence employees’ IB. In addition, the effects of organizational factors are considered. Specifically, the influence of external information awareness (EIA) and proactiveness of innovation strategy (PIS) are examined. Results from a survey of employees in Japanese organizations show that employees’ attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control not only significantly influence their innovative behavior, they also mediate the effects of EIA and PIS. This study contributes to research by understanding what individual and organizational factors influence employees’ IB and extending TPB by considering the effects of EIA and PIS, using data collected from an understudied yet important context. The findings also suggest that managers should focus on improving perceived behavioral controls, EIA and PIS to encourage employees’ IB.

Title:

AN EVENT-DRIVEN CARTOGRAPHIC APPROACH TO MODELLING SOFTWARE ENGINEERING KNOWLEDGE

Abstract: This paper proposes an event-based cartographic approach to managing software engineering knowledge that goes beyond the typical yellow-pages paradigm. After proposing a way of modelling knowledge assets, persons in an organisation and various relationships between these elements as a graph, the authors go on to demonstrate how this approach can be useful. Since the model is represented by a mathematical structure, established techniques from graph theory can be used for interesting analysis such as detecting knowledge risks, modelling staff turnover scenarios and identifying people who have similar knowledge to each other. The proposed approach uses an event-driven paradigm which infers the strength of knowledge relationships based on individuals’ participation in each knowledge asset’s life cycle.

Title:

A FIRST APPLICATION OF A COLLABORATION MATURITY MODEL IN THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY

Abstract: Trends like globalization and increased product and service complexity have pushed organizations to use more distributed, cross-disciplinary, cross-cultural, virtual teams. In this context, the quality of collaboration directly affects the quality of an organization’s outcomes and performance. This paper reports on the first field application of a Collaboration Maturity Model (Col-MM) through an automotive industry field study. This model was empirically developed during a series of Focus Group meetings with professional collaboration experts to maximize its relevance and practical applicability. Col-MM is intended to be sufficiently generic to be applied to any type of collaboration and useable to assess the collaboration maturity of a given team holistically through self-assessments performed by practitioners. The purpose of the study reported in this paper was to apply and evaluate the use of the Col-MM in practice. The results should be of interest to academic researchers and information systems practitioners interested in collaboration maturity assessment. The research contributes to the collaboration performance and (IT) project management literature, theory and practice through a detailed case study that develops artefacts that provide evidence of proof of value and proof of use in the field.

Title:

ONTOLOGY-DRIVEN PRODUCT CONFIGURATION - Industrial Use Case

Abstract: The paper proposes an approach based on application of ontology management technology to the tasks of product configuration and product code design in an industrial company. The development of the approach includes usage of Web-services for industrial environment representation and context-based information processing to facilitate the product configuration task. The research is illustrated via a case study for an industrial company that has more than 300 000 customers in 176 countries. A use case for ontology-driven product configuration demonstrates the applicability of the approach.

Title:

THE DIFFICULTY OF FINDING EXPERTS - Implementation Process of Corporate Yellow Pages

Abstract: Knowledge management (KM) has often been identified as one of the most important challenges for sustained organizational success. A number of theoretical models and practical projects to improve KM have been developed, but were unsatisfactory and took a general approach while neglecting a specific implementation process for KM. This paper presents a systematic implementation process for a KM initiative based on a needs analysis, which was conducted in an international biotechnological company. The implementation process comprises three phases: Diagnosis of KM problems and goal setting of a specific intervention; design and development of this intervention; and rollout of the intervention. The phases comprises three empirical studies: a needs analysis (study 1), a study on design and development (study 2), and an effect analysis after the rollout (study 3). Results of study 1 show that there are needs for improving the documentation, communication and utilization of knowledge about specific expertise of individual employees and experiences with projects. To fulfil these requirements it was decided to design and develop an expert finding system “corporate yellow pages” (study 2). Finally the paper will give an outlook on the effects of corporate yellow pages concerning the utilization, acceptance, individual and organizational effects (study 3).

Title:

A FEATURE-BASED ANALYSIS OF OPEN SOURCE TOOLS FOR ENTERPRISE 2.0 - Open Source Tools for Team Collaboration in SMEs

Abstract: The marketplace of Enterprise 2.0 tools that support knowledge workers within companies to work together on cognitive tasks and share information and knowledge is diversified and offers commercial systems of varying complexity and functional range as well as open source software. Like commercial systems, open source tools for Enterprise 2.0 provide a broad range of functionality and offer a good alternative for organisations – especially for SMEs. This paper presents a study of the growing market for Enterprise 2.0 systems and focuses entirely on ones that are available under an open source license. We introduce a set of 97 individual features and criteria to assess a representative sample of open source Enterprise 2.0 tools. Our results show that the marketplace of open source tools for Enterprise 2.0 offers technically mature solutions with a broad range of functionality.

Title:

IMPACT OF BEHAVIORAL FORCES ON KNOWLEDGE SHARING IN AN EXTENDED ENTERPRISE SYSTEM OF SYSTEMS

Abstract: An extended enterprise is both a system of systems (SoS) and a complex dynamical system. We characterize government-run joint and interagency efforts as “government extended enterprises” (GEEs) comprising sets of effectively autonomous organizations that must cooperate voluntarily to achieve desired GEE-level outcomes. Our research investigates the proposition that decision makers can leverage four “canonical forces” to raise the levels of both internal GEE cooperation and SoS-level operational effectiveness, changing the GEE's status as indicated by the "SoS differentiating characteristics" detailed by Boardman and Sauser. Two prior papers described the concepts involved, postulated the relationships among them, and discussed the n-player, iterated "Stag Hunt" methodology applied to execute a real proof-of-concept case (the U.S. Counterterrorism Enterprise's response to the Christmas Day Bomber) in an agent-based model. This paper presents preliminary conclusions from data analysis conducted as a result of ongoing testing of the simulation.

Title:

USING TASK HISTORIES TO SUPPORT PERSON-TO-PERSON KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE - Extracting and using Contextual Overlap and Levels of Expertise to Connect Knowledge Workers

Abstract: Knowledge within organizations is increasingly distributed, which raises the challenge to connect the right individuals for knowledge exchange when needed. In this contribution we analyze this challenge in detail and propose a concept to connect the right individuals by relying on the task histories of the knowledge workers. We first investigate relevant theoretical models such as transactive memory theory, social capital theory for knowledge exchange and a model based on socio-motivational and problem solving theory to find relevant constructs. We then analyze the relevant state-of-the-art to find that all approaches have some limitations with respect to the theoretical models. Our proposed solution to the challenge builds on using task histories for the matching, and we show how it can be used to determine contextual overlap and level of expertise – the first one is an adequate indicator for willingness to interact while the second one is an indicator for ability to have a fruitful interaction. We then describe a case study in which we employed our concept in a three month timeframe with 93 individuals. A survey after the case study shows that our assumptions concerning the relevance and benefit of context overlap are substantiated.

Title:

USING A STANDARDS-BASED APPROACH FOR A MULTIMEDIA KNOWLEDGE-BASE

Abstract: In recent years, we witnessed the diffusion and rise in popularity of software platforms for User Generated Content management, especially multimedia objects. These platforms handle a big quantity of unclassified information. UGC sites (i.e. YouTube and Flickr) do not force the users to perform classification operations and metadata definitions, leaving space to a logic of free-tags (Folksonomies). In the context of an industrial project financed by the Autonomous Region of Sardinia, the idea of producing a Geolocalized Guide based on a Knowledge-base came forth. Such Guide would be able to share georeferenced content with their users, originated from UGC sources as well as from users themselves. For this purpose, we defined an ontology that can represent the semantics of multimedia content, especially its metadata, which in turn can be given an unambiguous meaning. The innovation in this work is represented by the use of the Adobe XMP, DUBLIN CORE, EXIF, IPTC standards as a starting point. In order to unify metadata coming from different sources we defined all laws of mapping toward a structure defined by sources like YouTube and Flickr.

Title:

SEMANTICS AND KNOWLEDGE CAPITALIZATION IN ONLINE COMMUNITIES OF PRACTICE OF E-LEARNING

Abstract: Knowledge management in Communities of Practice of E-learning (CoPEs) is challenged by several issues: the complexity of knowledge, considered as interdisciplinary (psycho-cognitive, pedagogic, software-oriented, and hardware-oriented), the difficulty to access and reuse that knowledge, and the complexity of the knowledge capitalization process. Most of the knowledge exchanged is mainly tacit, based on direct communication between members, and therefore needs to be elicited and represented in a formal way to be capitalized. Explicit knowledge is generally shared and accessible through the CoPE’s repositories. However, it is not always well elicited and organized. In this paper, we propose an ontology-based framework for capitalizing knowledge for reuse in CoPEs. We show through an example of use how semantics can contribute to the management of the tacit knowledge that the community members own and therefore to the improvement of the learning process in CoPEs.

INTERACTIVE DIGITAL TV AS THE E-LEARNING PLATFORM - Towards Supportive Environments for Elderly

Abstract: Development of interactive digital television (iDTV) brings an opportunity to consider it as a certain type of e-learning platform especially appropriate for the elderly. The aging population suffers from many impairments that may worsen the rate of social exclusion. This unfavourable trend can be changed by the usage of interactive audio-visual applications enabling senior citizens to satisfy their specific needs and solve their particular problems. Moreover, it implies the opportunity to involve it in creation or improvement of supportive spaces with the aim to enhance the quality of life of elderly from the perspectives of the Ambient Intelligence vision. This paper presents an example of two iDTV applications focused on learning and cognitive training of elderly and it also outlines suggestions for further research in this field of study.

Title:

TIPPING THE BALANCE - Drivers and Barriers for Participation in a Knowledge Sharing and Collaboration Community

Abstract: In this paper we report our efforts to elicit an understanding of drivers and barriers for participation in a Web2.0 online community platform to support the unique collection of virtual collaboration requirements inherent in inter-organization, cross-cultural, and cross-discipline team environments that comprise the Atlantis community. Atlantis is a grant program to stimulate and fund the organization of dual degree master programs between consortia of European and American Universities. The key challenge in this project is neither the analysis nor construction of the online community platform (though neither is in itself a trivial task), but rather the question of how to encourage use of such a platform, and its evolution into a self-sustaining community. We report our findings from a workshop, interviews and a survey to gain understanding in the drivers and barriers of participation. The drivers and barriers are then presented as a design framework for an online learning community.

STRUCTURE-BASED INTERROGATION AND AUTOMATIC QUERY REFORMULATION

Abstract: This paper presents an information retrieval model on XML documents based on tree matching. Queries and documents are represented by extended trees. An extended tree is built starting from the original tree, with additional weighted virtual links between each node and its indirect descendants allowing to directly reach each descendant. Therefore only one level separates between each node and its indirect descendants. This allows to compare the user query and the document with flexibility and with respect to the query structural hints. The content of each node is however very important to decide whether a document element is relevant or not, thus the content should be taken into account in the retrieval process. We separate between the structurebased and the content-based retrieval processes. The structure notion should be taken into account during the retrieval process as well as during automatic query reformulation. We propose an approach to automatic query reformulation starting from the original query on one hand and the fragments judged relevant by the user on the other. Structure hints analysis allows us to identify nodes that match the user query and to rebuild it during the automatic query reformulation step. The main goal of this paper is to show the impact of structural hints in XML retrieval and XML query optimization. Some experiments have been undertaken into a dataset provided by INEXa to show the effectiveness of our proposals. aINitiative for the Evaluation of XML retrieval, an evaluation forum that aims at promoting retrieval capabilities on XML documents.

Title:

SHARING WHAT YOU KNOW, BUILDING EXPERTISE - Information Sharing between Generations in a Business Organization

Abstract: This paper explores the processes connected to information and knowledge sharing in the context of expert work in an organization undergoing technical succession. The qualitative empirical research was conducted among six senior-junior pairs participating in the technical succession in the studied company. According to the results, factors affecting knowledge sharing between generations are interaction, expectations, dispositions and circumstances which includes time for sharing and proximity. Knowledge sharing, which may include both transfer and building, happens in eight phases. Informal interaction is of high importance underlining an open information culture between generations and constitutes a prerequisite for sharing experts’ work related knowledge. Further, the novices in this study have high trust in the experienced employees knowledge and skills–though not necessarily in them as persons which, according to the results, can prevent knowledge sharing even when the circumstances for sharing are favourable. An important aspect in the study is how influential the novices’ conception of the work task is on knowledge sharing. Depending on whether they define their work as development or maintenance work determines the nature of knowledge shared and how it is shared.

KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT AND ORGANIZATIONAL PERFORMANCE - A KM IMPLEMENTATION FRAMEWORK IN INDIAN CONTEXT

Abstract: Knowledge Management (KM) is much more than just dissemination of knowledge. The real challenge organizations and decision makers face is conceptualizing the right approach to implement KM and developing strategies to manage the entire knowledge value chain. The purpose of this paper is to determine the state of KM implementation in Indian organizations. Literature survey, focus group discussion (FGD) and personal interviews are used for data collection. This paper reviews the existing KM frameworks and attempts to identify key dimensions. The sample comprised of Indian organizations which have either implemented KM or initiated the process of KM in their organizations. Convenience sampling is used to select the respondents. Transcripts prepared from FGD and personal interviews are subjected to content analysis. The paper reports the perceptions, views and experiences of senior executives. An attempt has been made to integrate the data collected into a framework to facilitate KM implementation. Although a number of empirical studies have been conducted in the past to study KM impact on performance, not many qualitative studies exist. The findings can help organizations to leverage knowledge in a structured manner to improve performance.

CALCULATING SEMANTIC SIMILARITY BETWEEN COMPUTER-UNDERSTANDABLE DESCRIPTORS OF SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH

Abstract: If researchers created computer-understandable descriptors as part of the process of authoring journal articles and other expert knowledge resources, intelligent computer-aided matching and searching applications that are critical for addressing complex and large-scale problems in society could be realized. The EKOSS system enables knowledge experts to create computer-understandable descriptors of their knowledge resources using description logics ontologies as formal knowledge representation languages. The descriptors, called semantic statements, are authored as description logic ABoxes in reference to a shared domain ontology in the form of a TBox. Reasoners using logic-based inference can then measure the semantic similarity between semantic statements, which can be applied in knowledge searching, mining and integration applications. A method for semantic matching that uses logic inference based on a DL ontology TBox to increase both the precision and recall of matching descriptors created as ABoxes is described, and the accuracy of the method compared to matching without logic inference is analyzed between a set of 15 semantic statements created using EKOSS to describe research articles related to sustainability science.

A MODEL USING DATA ENVELOPMENT ANALYSIS FOR THE CROSS EVALUATION OF SUPPLIERS UNDER UNCERTAINTY

Abstract: The paper addresses one of the key objectives of the purchasing function of a supply chain, i.e., the optimal selection of suppliers. We present a novel methodology that integrates the well-known cross-efficiency evaluation called Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and the Monte Carlo approach, to manage supplier selection considering uncertainty in the supply process, e.g. evaluating potential suppliers. The model allows to distinguish among several suppliers, overcoming the limitation of the traditional DEA method of not distinguishing among efficient suppliers. Moreover, the technique is able to classify suppliers with uncertain performance. The method is applied to the selection of suppliers of a Southern Italy SME.

INTERPRETATION OF COLLABORATIVE DECISIONS BY META-METRICS

Abstract: Knowledge is bound to person. It originates in persons and is used by persons. Knowledge can be based on data and information. It also represents a combination of classified experiences, values, context and expertise, which provides a framework for the evaluation of these experiences and information. Consolidated knowledge from multiple persons can, however, result in false outcomes, especially when values are transformed into metrics. Due to the occurring aggregation, particular information about person-specific differences in determining the overall assessment of a community is lost. Two similar assessments can be based on entirely different single evaluations, expertises or totalities. Hence, the assessment regarding their quality, balance and stability should be performed differently. Metrics about the initial data basis are necessary in order to provide interpretation aid. This paper introduces the meta-metrics for the interpretation of collaborative decision makings in communities of practice.

Abstract: Ontologies are built on systems that conceptually evolve over time. In addition, techniques and languages for building ontologies evolve too. This has led to numerous studies in the field of ontology versioning and ontology evolution. This paper presents a new way to manage the lifecycle of an ontology incorporating both versioning tools and evolution process. This solution, called VersionGraph, is integrated in the source ontology since its creation in order to make it possible to evolve and to be versioned. Change management is strongly related to the model in which the ontology is represented. Therefore, we focus on the OWL language in order to take into account the impact of the changes on the logical consistency of the ontology like specified in OWL DL.

EMBEDDING ON-LINE TRAINING IN AN E-PRESCRIBING SERVICE

Abstract: As the number of prescriptions rising nationally each year, Electronic Prescribing (ePrescribing) has been described as the solution to improved patient safety and reduced medication costs. Web-based technology should be fully embraced in the pharmacy industry as an aid to improve not only effectiveness and efficiency but also quality of health services, by reducing the number of errors that may be incurred with hand-written prescriptions. Healthcare information systems are facing the challenge of attempting to satisfy the needs of both novice and expert users, focusing on a high likelihood of physician adoption of ePrescribing. An ePrescribing service that premises a reusable, flexible, agile and adaptable training content with the objective to enable healthcare professionals instil their knowledge and expertise in the ePrescribing process, it may conduct to ePrescribing adoption. To this end, an online training embedded within the ePrescribing service could be used as it offers an intuitive, clear, how-to instruction on performing each action that the system provides to the user. In this paper the training content is provided as a system embedded within the ePrescribing service, using a learning management system (LMS) and to this end, the online training system acts as a collective online memory containing training material, contributing to the adoption of the ePrescribing service.

TOPINCS: A SOFTWARE FOR RAPID DEVELOPMENT OF WEB DATABASES

Abstract: Topincs is a software for rapid development of web databases on top of the familiar LAMP stack. It overcomes the slow development of rigid RDBMS based applications by using the semantic technology Topic Maps. A Topincs store is developed by modeling a Topics Maps schema. This schema is used for form generation and powers a virtual domain specific OOP interface which is used in services to transform, aggregate, and modify the data. Topincs takes over well known usage patterns from the traditional wiki, but replaces markup authoring with a form based approach for data entry. In addition any technological jargon is hidden from the user. This combination minimizes the entry barrier, so that a new user who is familiar with the domain of the web database can be pointed to the start page from where he can follow his nose.

Abstract: This work presents the approach used to select documents from the Brazilian Official Gazette for Federal Treasury domain and manage the explicit knowledge through a thesaurus according to ISO Standard 2788. The goal of the SIOP-LEGIS project joint with Department of Treasury is to facilitate search and retrieval of documents semantic related through hierarquic terms defined in the Thesaurus. The paper also presents a brief case study to demonstrate how the ontology domain evolution ocurrs in accordance with the legislation, case law and administrative acts in constant changes.

THE S-CUBE KNOWLEDGE MODEL - Experiences in Integrating SSME Research Communities

Abstract: The field of Service Science, Management & Engineering (SSME), covers a wide range of research topics and has become fragmented due to the necessary specialization such broad area requires. The European Commission’s Network of Excellence in Software Services and Systems (S-Cube) is an attempt to bring scientists together to perform joint research in this field that crosses existing research boundaries and, in the process of doing so, to help establish an enduring European network of researchers practicing SSME. To assist in the consolidation of research and bridge the gaps between disciplines, the S-Cube Knowledge Model (KM) has been developed to provide a method of capturing, managing and refining the knowledge produced by the network and provide a common understanding of research outputs. This paper describes the motivation, requirements and realization of the S-Cube KM, which allows the collection, analysis and management of research within S-Cube and enables the extraction and combination of the explicit, cross-cutting knowledge embedded in collaborative research.

Abstract: The adaptation phase is a key problem in the design of Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) systems. In most cases, adaptation methods are application-specific. Our challenge in this work is to make a general adaptation method for the field of industrial diagnostics. This paper is a contribution to fill this gap in the field of fault diagnostic and repair assistance of equipment. Our adaptation algorithm relies on hierarchy descriptors, an implied context model and dependencies between problems and solutions of the source cases. In addition, we note that the first retrieved case is not necessarily the most adaptable case, and to take into account this report we propose in our diagnostic problem an adaptation-guided retrieval step based on a similarity measure associated with an adaptation measure. These two measures allow selecting the most adaptable case among the retrieved cases. The two retrieval and adaptation phases are applied on real industrial system called SISTRE (Supervised industrial system of Transfer of pallets).

Abstract: The importance of managing organizational knowledge for enterprises has been recognized since decades. Enterprise knowledge modeling contributes to this subject by offering methods, tools and approaches for capturing knowledge in formalized models supporting the lifecycle of organizational knowledge management. The paper focuses on reuse of organizational knowledge in different organizational contexts by using patterns. We argue that organizational knowledge patterns have to combine technical and cognitive qualities in order to support organizational knowledge creation and IT-supported knowledge reuse. The contributions of the paper are (1) to define of the term organizational knowledge pattern in relation to other pattern types, (2) to identify characteristics of such patterns, and (3) to examine two established pattern types from knowledge engineering to expose the key features of organizational knowledge patterns.

Abstract: Use of Information Technology (IT) to facilitate storage, search and access to codified knowledge can enhance organizational performance. Considering the knowledge intensive nature of medical decision making, use of knowledge management systems (KMS) can potentially enhance delivery of patient care. This paper reports on a field study that investigated the impact of use of a KMS by emergency physicians on their decision making behaviors (admission of patients for in-hospital care) and efficiency of care. The findings indicate that in the emergency room (ER) under study, the use of a KMS for placing diagnostic orders resulted in lower hospital admissions, cost savings, and a shorter ER stay.

Abstract: Pervasiveness, real-time and online processing are important requirements included in the researchers’ agenda for the development of future generation of Intelligent Decision Support Systems (IDSS). In particular, knowledge discovery based IDSS operating in critical environments such of intensive care, should be adapted to those new requests. This paper introduces the way how INTCare, an IDSS developed in the intensive care unit of the Centro Hospitalar do Porto, will accommodate the new functionalities. Solutions are proposed for the most important constraints, e.g., paper based data, missing values, values out-of-range, data integration, data quality. The benefits and limitations of the approach are discussed.

STUDENTS’ PERCEPTIONS OF KNOWLEDGE SHARING THROUGH CLASS PARTICIPATION

Abstract: Knowledge sharing is a key to effective learning. Students with positive attitude towards knowledge sharing are likely to take this behaviour to their workplace which could help achieve organizational knowledge management goals. The main objective of this study was to explore students’ perceptions of class participation and its benefits, barriers to their participation, and the motivational factors that may improve their knowledge sharing. A pre-tested questionnaire was used for data collection, and 188 post-graduate students from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore participated in it. A majority of the students were aware of the benefits of knowledge sharing in their learning process as it provides an opportunity to listen to and appreciate diverse viewpoints, develop social and communication skills, and learn how to organize and present their ideas. The major barriers to class participation were: low English language proficiency, cultural barriers, shyness, and lack of confidence. This paper also provides some suggestions for improving effectiveness of class participation, particularly in the Asian context. It also highlights the role of instructors in helping and motivating students to overcome their fear of public speaking as well as to use this avenue for refining their communication skills.

COOPERATIVE QUESTION ANSWERING FOR THE SEMANTIC WEB

Abstract: In this paper we propose a Cooperative Question Answering System that takes as input queries expressed in natural language and is able to return a cooperative answer obtained from resources in the Semantic Web, more specifically DBpedia databases represented in OWL/RDF. Moreover, when the DBpedia provides no answer, we use the WordNet in order to build similar questions. Our system resorts to ontologies not only for reasoning but also to find answers and is independent of prior knowledge of the semantic resources by the user. The natural language question is translated into its semantic representation and then answered by consulting the semantics sources of information. If there are multiple answers to the question posed (or to the similar questions for which DBpedia contains answers), they will be grouped according to their semantic meaning, providing a more cooperative and clean answer to the user.

BREACHING THE STRONGROOM - A Pervasive Informatics Approach to Working with Medieval Manuscripts

Abstract: This paper outlines a pervasive approach to informatics-enhanced humanities research on medieval manuscripts. Digital surrogates (created for conservational as much as for research purposes) provide a first step towards ‘breaching the strongroom’. Yet even when libraries can offer scholars digital copies of manuscripts, the holdings available rarely match up as a corpus to those sought by a particular scholar. Progress towards overcoming the mismatch has begun to be made via large-scale online digitisation initiatives such as the Roman de la Rose, e-Codices and Europeana Regia projects, collating thousands of items from research libraries on different continents. Focusing on the Online Froissart project, the paper looks first at some new tools for making online manuscript collections more genuinely pervasive, insofar as they allow users to move seamlessly through, across and within them. The second topic addressed is the additional informatic uses to which the project’s electronic images are being put (using as a springboard the analysis of their semantic content) in the wider context of e-Research conducted by an international consortium working out of the Universities of Sheffield, Urbana-Champaign, Michigan State and South Carolina and using the same Cloud-based technologies to investigate distinct but ultimately comparable image corpora.

SOLVENCY ASSESSMENT IN AN UNBALANCED SAMPLE

Abstract: This paper proposes an improved approach to the assessment of firms’ solvency. First, sound companies are classified into clusters according to their financial similarities by using Kohonen’s Self Organizing Maps (SOM). Then, each cluster is replaced by a director vector which summarizes all the companies that the cluster includes. The next step is the estimation of a classification model through Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines (MARS). For the test of the model we considered a real setting of Spanish enterprises from the construction sector. In this dataset the proportion of distressed firms is very close to that which is derived from Economic statistics. Our results indicate that our system performs better than two benchmarking models, namely a back-propagation neural network and a simple MARS model.

Abstract: The article focuses on knowledge management system (KMS) as a support in innovation management. It presents one aspect of the research carried out in NetLine Group, a Polish IT company. IT market is highly competitive and constantly changing, often rapidly and unpredictably. For this reason, the company's development strategy must be directed at the implementation of the idea of 'continuous innovation'. An original approach to innovation management process, based on Theory of Constraints has been proposed in order to implement this strategy. This approach provides a conceptual base for the elements, which are constitutive of the system of innovation management. One of them is the KMS, which relates to this article. Based on the experience of NetLine Company, the importance of KMS in the context of problems of innovation management is pointed out. Assumptions and concept of KMS development in an innovation area was defined. Article also highlights the expected benefits of the implementation of KMS and identifies potential threats associated with it.

Abstract: Transition to e-government services is a worldwide tendency. However, each country possesses its own specifics, which need to be taken into account. The given study is dedicated to transition towards e-government services in Russia. A method for formal specification of Russian government services is presented. This method can be used for e-government services optimizing, restructuring and checking, design of e-access software, and semi-automatic producing services’ Web-content. We have adapted OntoGov approach to specify domain ontology. Basing on the mentioned ontology separate services have to be described: process model (customized BPMN notation), document model (based on Feature Diagrams) and description model. An example of a Web-content generation under formal specifications is presented. Pilot method deployment for specification of Russian government services, which required Russian and Finnish citizen to communicate with each other, is described.

Our study concerns the transition from an outgoing service provider to an incoming one during an outsourcing development project in a public institution. This transition mainly consists in transferring the project. The transfer involves not only materials (documents and code) but also knowledge. Based on literature on knowledge transfer, we exhibit good practices for the transition phase of an on-going outsourced project. We show how we applied these good practices on a –real- application case.

Abstract: This paper aims to contribute with some insights on the use of Lean Six Sigma as an improvement tool in an educational environment, in order to improve the efficiency of the network based structure for the provision of social and educational services at the bicentennial institution: Casa Pia de Lisboa (CPL). We suggest to combine management methodologies and Quality tools in order to build and implement continuous improvement programs. The selection of Lean and Six-Sigma as improvement tools for Casa Pia is based on the fact that organizations whose management is focused on processes, are currently incorporating LSS methodologies in their continuous improvement programmes. The planning process is already designed, with the goals and objectives of the various CPL units already defined and properly registered (Planning Process). The implementation of the Control process was initiated in January 2011 and three months of monitoring have already been secured. The expectations in the use of Lean Six Sigma to improve the Control Process are high. If succeeded this project will allow CPL to better monitor and control progress towards its goals, better support the top management and operational decision making processes. Although the use of LSS in an educational context has been recommended by several authors, reality shows that, in general, educational institutions are not aware of the benefits resulting from the application of these methodologies.

Abstract: The goal of the research is to design the concept and architecture for new collaborative e-business model in order to join knowledge management and intellectual capital under the approach of engineering systems. A collaborative system is designed as a part of new assets, called intellectual capital. We build a supply design to understand the collaboration among people, processes and systems inside a holistic approach. To do that the paper presents two models: the first model is the integration among intellectual capital, collaborative systems and e-business; and then the second model is designed to understand the behaviour of software agents. Processes are analyzed on their value, for example we need to know if the results of a process may be important for someone in order to resolve a specific problem. This concept will be used in one controlled environment and to do that we need some functions of the software agents to complete one specific process and evaluate some alternatives for the best solution. As a result we get the new process of a collaborative system, also we define the ability to collaborate and leverage the knowledge giving to software agents some decisions that we take in a real problem. After the process has been completed we have improve the design of collaborative e-business performance under the approach of intellectual capital and knowledge management.

Abstract: Today, one of most challenging problems in publishing social networks data is preserving privacy of their entities. Until now, some attacks against identity of entities have been known. In particular, neighborhood attacks were defined and a model to preserve privacy of published social networks against 1-neighborhood attacks was proposed. However, this model considered just a simple social network that has only one type of unlabeled relationship between entities. In addition, sensitive relationships that almost exist in real social networks are not considered. In this paper, we consider a more comprehensive and applicable model of social networks including labeled entities and multiple labeled relationships. We also consider sensitive and non-sensitive relationships between entities. In the proposed approach, to anonymize a social network data, we first detect neighborhood graphs and then compute the cost of anonymization. Finally, we will be able to group vertices based on similarity of their neighborhood graphs by using the anonymization cost and anonymize the entire of social network data. We use the k-anonymity approach to develop our new model. Our approach is flexible to help data owners to make proper trade-off between data privacy and data utilization using anonymization cost.

Abstract: In this article, we present Medpeer, a new peer-to-peer (P2P) management system for heterogeneous and distributed data sources. Its principal goal is to provide necessary tools for the semantic mediation of data from various types (relational, image, text,..) and for the semantic routing of multimodal queries in an P2P environment. In this environment, each peer will be able to publish the data he wants to share, he is completely autonomous and the data can belong to different models. MedPeer is a Super-Peer system where the super-peers are organized by type of data and contain an ontological structure specific to each type. Each peer exports their data in a common format in the form of a semantically rich ontology in order to contribute to schemas reconciliation. The queries exchanged have a common format in the form of XML documents, and are routed towards the relevant peers thanks to a semantic topology built on top of the existing physical topology.

However, digital cities are complex and of high risk projects and their sustainability is not guaranteed. This paper focuses on the development of a selection system for various solutions available for a digital city. It considers available solutions the information systems that have been applied successfully in existing cases, and a fuzzy-based model for their selection. The model considers a group of stakeholders/supervisors that applies a number of different-weighted selection criteria on numerous information systems, in order to define the requirements of a digital city planned project. Despite ontology and other semantic technics, the binding of heterogeneous information systems requires new technics of managing and displaying information according to the semantic representation of each stakeholder of the collaboration. In this paper we addressed the problem of merging geographical information systems and building information model. The way to achieve this goal must solve several heterogeneity problems due to the data life cycle, the data temporality, the binding between 2D geo-referenced modelling and 3D geometric models or problem of scalability for real-time 3D display from remote server for managing a real environment of several million m2. To bridge this gap, we present a new architecture based on a semantic multi-representation of heterogeneous information.

Abstract: This paper assessed the potential application of knowledge management in local governance in the Philippines. It is a case study of the Municipality of Cabuyao, a local government unit (LGU) in the country which extensively utilized the benefits of knowledge management to improve its corporate existence, subject to limitations of the country’s law regarding the corporate powers of LGUs. The study found that the said municipality enacted an ordinance that created the organization that will serve as the municipality’s corporate arm. The municipal government of Cabuyao has many practices and activities to strengthen the corporate existence of the municipality that fall under the knowledge management field, some of which are pioneering for a government organization. These include active networking and alliance building with other organizations such as the private sector, academic and research institutions; tapping experts to come up with more stable policy; and investing on research and development (R&D) to maximize the corporate opportunities for the municipality. It is recommended however for the municipality’s corporate arm to set up its own knowledge management system and to designate a separate unit which will be fully devoted to its knowledge management activities.

Abstract: Interdisciplinary communities involve people and knowledge from different disciplines in addressing a common challenge. Differing perspectives, processes, methods, tools, vocabularies, and standards are problems that arise in this context. We present an approach to support bringing together disciplines based on a common body of knowledge (CBK), in which knowledge from different disciplines is collected, integrated, and structured. The novelty of our approach is twofold: first, it introduces a CBK ontology, which allows one to semantically enrich contents in order to be able to query the CBK in a more elaborate way afterwards. Second, it heavily relies on user participation in building up a CBK, making use of the Semantic MediaWiki as a platform to support collaborative writing. The CBK ontology is backed by a conceptual framework, consisting of concepts to structure the knowledge, to provide access options to it, and to build up a common terminology. To ensure a high quality of the provided contents and to sustain the community’s commitment, we further present organizational means as part of our approach. We demonstrate our work using the example of a Network of Excellence EU project, which aims at bringing together researchers and practitioners from services computing, security and software engineering.

A METRO MAP METAPHOR FOR KNOWLEDGE VISUALIZATION - Customer Needs in Mobile Application Services

Abstract: A metro map metaphor has proven useful in organization and communication of knowledge in a visual way. Amongst others, customer needs are mostly expressed in text format and thus are an ample source of knowledge visualization. This paper aims to develop a metro map metaphor for visually navigating customer needs in mobile application services. Based on the suggested metaphor, customer needs are grouped and linked visually according to the customer segments and characteristics of the needs. The proposed approach consists of four stages: identifying and evaluating customer needs, developing a metro map metaphor for customer needs, developing a metro map-metaphor based customer needs map, and utilizing a metro map-metaphor based customer needs map. The suggested approach is expected to facilitate management of diverse and complex raw data through knowledge visualization.

Abstract: Developing a meaning service like a suitable ontology is of paramount importance to achieve Computing Semantic Interoperability (CSI) in every field. In Healthcare, every system involved must agree in the “meaning” of a clinical concept. This is the fundamental concept of Shared Semantics that has to be realized to obtain CSI in the Health sub-domain of knowledge. We present the HL7 RIM inadequacy for ontology mapping and how to circumvent it using the BRIDG DAM. Natural Language Processing techniques for automated ontology population are discussed and the current trends about knowledge representation and reasoning in the Healthcare domain are presented.

Abstract: This paper summarizes a new approach for creating test scenarios and stimuli presentation in neuroinformatics ERP experiments. The approach uses visual programming that allows creation of test scenarios without a need of any programming language knowledge. The newly designed programming language is described in this paper. Solution for weaknesses of visual programming is provided. The next part deals with performance of stimuli presentation software to ensure lowest possible latency between stimuli presentation and synchronisation with electroencephalograph.
