EXPLORING THE VALUE OF ENTERPRISE WIKIS: A Multiple-Case Study

Authors:

Alexander Stocker

Abstract: We present the results of our explorative multiple-case study investigating concept, implementation and utilization of internal wikis in three Austrian enterprises. We collected all data during structured interviews with internal knowledge management experts responsible for the wiki implementation and from online surveys of non-executives employees being users. Our contribution was highly motivated from the continuing discussion on Corporate Web 2.0 and Enterprise 2.0 and unfortunately, the lack of well-grounded empirical studies by contrast. We feel that challenges and benefits of Web 2.0 technologies and applications for the enterprise are just starting to be systematically explored.

Interconnection of Communities of Practice: a Web Platform for Knowledge Management

Authors:

Elise Lavoué

Abstract: Our works aim at developing a Web platform to connect various Communities of Practice (CoPs) and to capitalise on all their knowledge. This platform addresses CoPs interested in a same general activity, for example tutoring. For that purpose, we propose a general model of Interconnection of Communities of Practice (ICP), based on the concept of Constellation of Practice (CCP) developed by Wenger (1998). The model of ICP was implemented and has been used to develop the TE-Cap 2 platform which has, as its field of application, educational tutoring activities. In particular, we propose an indexation and search tool for the ICP knowledge base. The TE-Cap 2 platform has been used in real conditions. We present the main results of this descriptive investigation to validate this work.

WebC-Docs: A CMS-based Document Management System

Authors:

João Saraiva and Alberto Rodrigues da Silva

Abstract: Content Management Systems (CMS) are typically regarded as critical software platforms for the success of organizational web sites and intranets. Nevertheless, a simple CMS alone does not provide enough support for a typical organization's requirements, such as document management and storage. On the other hand, Enterprise Content Management (ECM) systems are typically regular web-applications that provide such functionality but without the added advantage of being based on a component-based CMS platform. This paper presents the architecture and major technical details of WebC-Docs, a highly-customizable toolkit (for the WebComfort CMS platform) that provides document management functionality. Due to this, the WebC-Docs toolkit can be configured and used in various kinds of scenarios.

A CONCEPT AND SERVICE BASED ANALYSIS OF COMMERCIAL AND OPEN SOURCE ENTERPRISE 2.0 TOOLS

Authors:

Thomas Büchner, Christian Neubert, Thomas Büchner and Florian Matthes

Abstract: There is a growing market for integrated web-based tools to support team collaboration and knowledge management within enterprises. The goal of this paper is to provide a detailed analysis of their concepts and services. We examine seven Enterprise 2.0 tools in detail and derive a unifying multi-dimensional classification and evaluation framework. For each dimension we identify several technical criteria to characterize the functional capabilities of a given tool. Based on this schema we provide a detailed description of the following commercial and open source tools: Alfresco Share, Atlassian Confluence, GroupSwim, Liferay Social Office, Microsoft Office SharePoint Server, Socialtext, Tricia. This work contributes to a better technical understanding of this emerging family of enterprise applications, highlights strengths and weaknesses of existing tools and identifies areas for further system research and development.

VALUE KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT: PROCESS STRUCTURING FOR MULTI-PARTY CONFLICT

Authors:

John Rohrbaugh and Shahidul Hassan

Abstract: Value knowledge management (VKM) comprises the process structuring required to make individual and/or group values explicit in a manner so that such initially tacit knowledge appropriately informs decision making. This paper presents a case in which VKM is used for structuring an organizational preparation process for a new and substantial initiative. Fundamental group conflicts exist with respect to this initiative and, more immediately, with respect to the extent of preparation envisioned. The relative importance of two key values is at issue: increasing human capital and reducing project costs. The case illustrates a three-stage approach to VKM and demonstrates how the articulation of group judgment policies, the development of a shared resource allocation model, and the application of analytical mediation can make a substantial contribution to organizational problem solving or opportunity seeking.

A Knowledge Management Perspective on Corporate Portal : KM Processes and Benefits

Authors:

Kamla Ali Al-Busaidi

Abstract: This pilot study examines a corporate portal from a knowledge management perspective by identifying the impacts of several corporate portal tools that support organizational knowledge management processes (such as acquisition, conversion, application and protection) on organizational processes (such as efficiency, effectiveness and innovation) and people (such as learning, adaptability and satisfaction). Preliminary analysis based on academic staff utilization of a corporate portal in a local university in Oman shows that providing tools through corporate portals that support knowledge conversion improves the effectiveness and efficiency of the organizational processes and people's learning, whereas providing tools that support knowledge applications improves the effectiveness of organizational processes as well as people learning, adaptability and satisfaction. Thus, the analysis indicates that knowledge conversion impacts organizational processes more than people, whereas the knowledge application impacts people more than organizational processes. Offering tools that support knowledge protection also improves the effectiveness of organizational processes. However, the preliminary analysis shows that knowledge acquisition process has no impact on organizational processes or people.

AN AJAX APPLICATION TO IMPROVE ONLINE ONTOLOGY BROWSING: ONTOLOGY EXPLORER

Authors:

Nicola Gessa, Massimo Bondi and Matteo Busanelli

Abstract: OWL ontologies are one of the fundamental bricks of the Semantic Web architecture. In spite of this, ontology visualization on a web browser is nowadays not so easy; commercial browsers just show ontologies in plain text, with the OWL code. To avoid this, many ontology developers have implemented, together with their own ontologies, specific web applications to display them. But this can not be the right direction: a common Internet user does not have an easy way to browse an online ontology. Starting from a wide analysis of these applications for ontology visualization, considering their limitations and the last solutions for the development of dynamic web tools, the authors propose a GWT based architecture that, exploiting AJAX technologies can ease the interfacing of web users with OWL ontologies.

UNIFYING SEMANTIC ANNOTATION AND QUERYING IN BIOMEDICAL IMAGE REPOSITORIES

Authors:

Daniel Sonntag, Daniel Sonntag and Manuel Möller

Abstract: In the medical domain, semantic image retrieval should provide the basis for the help in decision support and computer aided diagnosis. But knowledge engineers cannot easily acquire the necessary medical knowledge about the image contents. Based on their semantics, we present a set of techniques for annotating images and querying image data sets. The unification of semantic annotation (using a GUI) and querying (using natural dialogue) in biomedical image repositories is based on a unified view of the knowledge acquisition process. We use a central RDF repository to capture both medical domain knowledge as well as image annotations and understand medical knowledge engineering as an interactive process between the knowledge engineer and the clinician. Our system also supports the interactive process between the dialogue engineer and the clinician.

A SOCIAL APPROACH FOR SEMI-STRUCTURED DOCUMENT MODELING AND ANALYSIS

Authors:

Ibrahim Bounhas

Abstract: This paper treats the social constraints that should be taken into account in semi-structured document modeling and analysis. The goal is to allow personalized and precise access to a library of hyper-documents. In fact, a document is viewed and analyzed as the object of a transaction between producers and beneficiaries. Then, the first condition for the success of the document reading process is to bring about confidence between the two parties. Thus document analysis should help in authority evaluation which is based on identifying the names and the roles of the producers as well as studying their behavior. Our proposed approach is social-based. Beside authority study, we propose to identify document usage types. A usage type defines how a community of users can have access to a document. Designing a document parser requires to solve complex problems. We argue that authority evaluation requirements and document usage types are important parameters that can reduce this complexity. Thus, the first step of our approach consists in identifying social parameters. Then documents are fragmented in regard to their logical structure. We distinguish between two levels: the macro-logical level and the micro-logical level. These two levels allow us to design a generic approach that can be applied to documents having different types and styles.

CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTORS OF TECHNOLOGY PARKSIN AUTSRALIA

Authors:

Radwan Kharabsheh

Abstract: Given the potential importance of technology parks, their complexity in terms of the scope of required investment and the growing interest of governments to use them as tools for creating sustainable development there is a pressing need for a better understanding of the critical success factors of these entities. However, Briggs and watt (2001) argued that the goal of many technology parks and the factors driving innovation success are still a mystery. In addition, it is argued that the problem with analyzing technology parks and cluster building is that recent studies analyze “the most celebrated case studies… to ‘explain’ their success” (Holbrook and Wolfe, 2002). This study uses intensive interviewing of technology parks’ managers and managers of tenant firms in the technology park to explore critical success factors of four of Australia’s' technology parks. The study identified the following critical success factors: a culture of risk-taking “entrepreneurism”, an autonomous park management that is independent of university officials and government bureaucrats, an enabling environment, a critical mass of companies that allows for synergies within the technology park, the presence of internationally renounced innovative companies, and finally a shared vision among the technology park stakeholders.

MEASURING THE IMPACT OF KNOWLEDGE: A COMPARISON OF WEB OF SCIENCE AND GOOGLE SCHOLAR

Authors:

John Mingers and Lea Lipitakis

Abstract: Assessing the quality of the knowledge produced by management academics is increasing being metricated. Moreover, emphasis is being placed on the impact of the research rather than simply where it is published. The main metric for impact is the number of citations a paper receives. Traditionally this data has come from the ISI Web of Science but research has shown that this has poor coverage in the social sciences. A newer and different source for citations is Google Scholar. In this paper we compare the two on a dataset of over 1200 publications from a UK Business School. The results show that Web of Science is indeed poor in the area of management and that Google Scholar, whilst somewhat unreliable, has a much better coverage.

KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT AND ACQUISITION IN DIGITAL REPOSITORIES: A SEMANTIC WEB PERSPECTIVE

Authors:

Dimitrios Koutsomitropoulos and Georgia Solomou

Abstract: Information management, description and discovery, as they are today implemented in digital repositories and digital libraries systems, can surely benefit from the stack of Semantic Web technologies. Most importantly, the ability to infer implied information over declared facts and assertions, based on their rich descriptions and associations, can span new possibilities in how stored assets can be accessed, searched and discovered. In this paper we propose a process and implementation that provides for inference-based knowledge discovery, retrieval and navigation on top of digital repositories, based on existing metadata and other semi-structured information. We show that it is possible to produce added-value and meaningful results even when existing descriptions are only flatly organized and we achieve this with little manual intervention. Our work and results are based on real-world data and applied on the official University of Patras institutional repository that is based on DSpace.

Abstract: This paper deals with Knowledge Management (KM) in the specific industrial context of special machine design. Our purpose is to study how relevant a KM approach in such an environment is. The theoretical background highlights the concept of crucial knowledge and the codification and personalisation strategies. From a field study, we show the existence of recurrences and experts in special machine engineering design, justifying a KM approach. We also put forword a condition to make this approach effective: the existence of a device enabling experts to work collaboratively.

KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT CONCEPTS FOR TRAINING BY PROJECT : An observation of the case of project management education

Authors:

Christine Michel and Patrick Prévôt

Abstract: Project management education programmes are often proposed in higher education to give students competences in project planning (Gantt’s chart), project organizing, human and technical resource management, quality control and also social competences (collaboration, communication), emotional ones (empathy, consideration of the other, humour, ethics), and organizational ones (leadership, political vision, and so on). This training is often given according a training-by-project type of learning with case studies. This article presents one course characterized by a pedagogical organization based upon Knowledge Management (KM) concepts: knowledge transfer and construction throughout a learning circle and social interactions. The course is supported by a rich and complex tutor organization. We have observed this course by using another KM method inspired from KADS with various return of experience formalized into cards and charts. Our intention is, according to the model of Argyris and Schön (Smith, 2001), to gain feedback information about local and global processes and about actors’ experience in order to improve the course. This paper describes precisely the course (pedagogical method and tutor activity) and the KM observation method permitting to identify problem to solve. In our case, we observe problem of pedagogical coordination and skills acquisition. We propose to design a metacognitive tool for tutors and students, usable for improving knowledge construction and learning process organisation.

DISTINGUISHING KNOWLEDGE FROM INFORMATION A Prerequisite for Elaborating KM Initiative Strategy

Authors:

Michel Grundstein

Abstract: Although the technological approach of Knowledge Management (KM) is greatly shared, without awareness, when elaborating KM initiative’s strategy, we can confuse the notions of information and knowledge, and disregard the importance of individual’s tacit knowledge used in action. Therefore, to avoid misunderstanding during the strategic orientation phase of a general KM initiative development, it is fundamental to clearly distinguish the notion of information from the notion of knowledge. Further, we insist on the importance to integrate the individual as a component of the Enterprise’s Information and Knowledge System (EIKS). In this paper, we argue that Knowledge cannot be considered as an object such as data are in digital information systems. Consequently, we propose an empirical model enabling to distinguish the notions of information and knowledge. This model shows the role of individual’s interpretative frameworks and tacit knowledge, establishing a discontinuity between information and knowledge. This pragmatic vision needs thinking about the architecture of an Enterprise’s Information and Knowledge System (EIKS), which must be a basis of discussion during the strategic orientation phase of a KM initiative.

A WEB PLAFORM FOR INNOVATION PROCESS FACILITATION

Authors:

Marie-Helene Abel and Adeline Leblanc

Abstract: Innovation is the prerequisite of knowledge creation and the essence of knowledge management. It has become a crucial factor in company performance and survival. It can be seen as a process and not only as a result. As a result, innovation is relative to the company’s capabilities to learn – way, from which new knowledge can be developed, distributed and used. As a process, it concerns the design of products or new services. It concerns also the emergence, the circulation and the achievement of new ideas. It is located at the core of a progressive collective learning which needs old experiences voluntary capitalization. Finally, we consider it as a complex process which reifies mainly three intertwined sub processes: A social process, an organizational learning process and a knowledge management process. The main link between these sub processes is organizational knowledge. In this paper we present these three sub processes and put forward their needs of a dedicated computarized support which allows organizational knowledge sharing. Then we specify how we took them into account in the framework of the project MEMORAe2.0 to design a web platform fostering innovation process.

BENCHMARKING BASED PERFORMANCE MANAGMENET FOR CONSTRUCTION CONTRACTORS

Authors:

Moonseo Park and Youjin Jang

Abstract: In a competitive industry, effective performance management is an essential element of business success. However, despite their importance, performance management systems have not yet been widely implemented in construction companies. That said, many construction companies have become increasingly aware of the need to more systematically identify, implement, and sustain performance improvements in recent years. The objective of this paper is to develop benchmarking based performance management for construction contractors. This paper investigates examples of PMSs in the U.K., U.S., Brazil, and Chile and discusses the lessons learned. Then, to overcome the limitations of existing PMSs, a new performance measurement framework, in the form of a ‘Construction’ BSC, is presented. And a learning process using knowledge push is proposed. Finally, this paper develops a PMS for benchmarking in construction companies and recommends further areas of study for this research topic.

USER GOAL-ORIENTED REQUIREMENTS ELICITATION TO IMPROVE ACCEPTANCE AND USE.A Case Study on Document Management

Authors:

Gianmario Motta, Giovanni Pignatelli and Paolo Roveri

Abstract: We present a case study that exemplifies an extension of AWARE, a goal oriented requirement elicitation technique, for a collaborative document management system. The case concerns a multinational fast growing Management Consulting company. The system serves both marketing activities and actual work of the variegated consultant community. The system is loaded at “Zero-cost” by the consultants who, through an editorial model, share the knowledge coming from the document base. The key points of the extension are a stakeholder orientation that allows to create as many document management environments as the professional communities, the use of a goal oriented approach that has actually encouraged active participation of future users, the ever present care in maximizing the value received by each professional community and minimizing the effort required to use the system. The research is still in progress but the first phase of the project has been successful, and the consulting company not only is implementing the system but decided to adopt the methodology for themselves and their customers.

DISTRIBUTED ALLOCATION OF A CORPORATE SEMANTIC WEB

Authors:

Ana Rios-Alvarado, Ricardo Marcelín-Jiménez and Carolina Medina

Abstract: This paper outlines a general method for allocating a document collection over a distributed storage system. Documents are organized to make up a corporate semantic web featured by a graph G1 , each of whose nodes represents a set of documents having a common range of semantic indices. There exists a second graph G2 modelling the distributed storage system. Our approach consists of embedding G1 into G2 , under space restrictions. We use a meta-heuristic called “Ant Colony Optimization”, to solve the corresponding instances of the graph embedding problem, which is known to be a NP problem. Our solution provides an efficient mechanism for information storage and retrieval.

Abstract: The Bologna Process aimed to build a European Higher Education Area with the objective of promoting students mobility. The adoption of Bologna Declaration directives requires a decentralized approach that accelerates student’s mobility, based on frequently updated legislation. This paper proposes a student personal system to manage student’s academic information. This system is supported by a flexible model that integrates, for instance, knowledge about the student attended courses or about a course that the student wishes to apply. Essentially, this model holds a (i) Student’s Academic Record with skills acquired in academic course units, professional experience or training and an (ii) Individual Studies Plan, which places the student in a particular (iii) Course Plan setting the curricular structure that the student wishes to apply.

A KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT APPROACH FOR INDUSTRIAL MODEL-BASED TESTING

Authors:

Dmitrij Koznov

Abstract: This paper offers a knowledge management method for industrial model-based testing, which based on partial specifications and “attached” to the software development process that uses it. Partial specification means formal description of considerable/potentially problematic properties of a system, and is used for further automated testing. That allows reducing expenses of testing compared to developing full formal specifications. The “attached” nature of the method means that the team of testers can work independently of the basic process, without imposing on it any specific limitations connected with model-based testing. The method intends for lightweight processes where a lack of documentation and formal described requirements are absent. The paper also presents approbation of the method while testing an industrial Web-application by means of model-based testing technology UniTesk.

LEARNING SCENARIOS AND SERVICES FOR AN SME - Collaboration Between an SME and a Research Team

Authors:

Vladan Devedzic, Jelena Jovanovic, Viktor Pocajt and Ksenija Nikoletic

Abstract: This paper proposes learning scenarios and learning services to support collaboration between Small or Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and research teams. Successful SMEs take special care about constant improvement of their business processes. To do this, they act as learning organizations – they acquire new knowledge, facilitate the learning of all their employees, learn collectively, and use various approaches and tools to support learning processes within an organization. However, competition on the market and deadline pressures often reduce the time the employees can use to learn in their organizations. To this end, collaboration with research teams can provide useful guidance to learning SMEs. The paper discusses such collaboration between a specific SME and a specific research team, but the scenarios proposed can be easily generalized to other cases of collaboration between SMEs and research teams.

FACILITATING DECISION MAKING, RE-USE AND COLLABORATION: A KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT APPROACH FOR SYSTEM SELF-AWARENESS

Authors:

Ying Zhao, Shelley Gallup, Douglas MacKinnon, John Robey and Chris Odell

Abstract: Decades of reform have been largely ineffective at improving the efficiency of the DoD Acquisition System, due in part to the complex processes and stovepipe activities that result in duplication of effort, lack of re-use and limited collaboration on related development efforts. This research applies Knowledge Management (KM) concepts and methodologies to the DoD acquisition enterprise to increase “Program Self Awareness” (Gallup and MacKinnon, 2008). This research supports the implementation of reform initiatives such as Capability Portfolio Management and Open Systems Architecture which share the common objectives of reducing duplication of effort, promoting collaboration and re-use of components. The DoD Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) Program will be used as a test case to develop prototype data schemas and apply text and data mining tools to identify duplication and/or gaps in the features of select MDA technologies. This paper will also provide the foundation for future development of the System Self-awareness concept and KM tools to support decision making and collaboration in diversified commercial and military applications.

MODELLING COGNITIVE TRANSACTIONSFOR ECONOMIC AND ACCOUNTING ANALYSIS

Authors:

Ettore Bolisani

Abstract: When knowledge is treated as a fundamental factor of economic activity, the development of methods for assessing its economic value becomes essential. This issue has often been discussed both in the scientific literature and for the managerial practice, but with controversial results. This position paper argues that there is need to reflect on the foundational aspects of the problem, and suggests looking at the way the exchange of knowledge between traders underpins economic transactions and enables the production of economic value. A model of cognitive transaction, representing the way knowledge exchanges have an economic significance per se, is proposed as a starting point of future research on this issue. The critical and open questions of the application of this model, as well as the points of a research agenda, are illustrated.

COMPETENCE DEVELOPMENT AMONG IT-CONSULTANTS: The need for collective and structured reflection

Authors:

Stefan Cronholm

Abstract: This paper is about the knowledge transferring between IT-consultants. IT-consultants are involved in many complex and challenging situations. They need to manage organisational, semantic and technical issues. Managing this complexity requires a high and a variety of competences. Examples of competences needed are business development, project management, information system development methods and techniques. An IT-consultant often makes continuous movements between different assignments and clients. The competence developed is often individually based. Individually based knowledge is not sufficient since the IT-consultants have to carry organisational working procedures. Furthermore, the competence needed is not static; it is something that should evolve dynamically. In this paper we are proposing a collective competence development approach. The collective competence development approach consists of a process model and a conceptual model. The aim of both these models is to make individual based knowledge as subject to collective reflection.

The Role of Trust in Impact of Leadership on Knowledge Sharing

Authors:

Pradip Sadarangani and Ankur Arora

Abstract: Knowledge sharing in an organization constitutes an important area of research. Many researchers have argued of the importance of knowledge as a source of sustainable competitive advantage. There has been increasing difficulty in institutionalizing knowledge developed at individual and group level within the organization. Leaders are seen as central to knowledge sharing within an organization. Following the framework of Baron and Kenny’s (1986), which differentiates between moderation and mediation methodologically, use of structural equation modeling is proposed to test the moderation and mediation effects. Structural equation modeling (using LISREL) is used to examine whether trust acts as a mediator or moderator between leadership and knowledge sharing. Our contribution to the literature is to resolve the debate whether trust acts a moderator or mediator between leadership and knowledge sharing.

QUALITY MANAGEMENT IN KNOWLEDGE INTENSIVE BUSINESS PROCESSES

Authors:

Priscilla Heinze and Dennis Geers

Abstract: Up to now the isolated tools for quality, business process, and knowledge management can be integrated to develop a suitable structure for SMEs to measure and gradually build up the competence for knowledge processing. A maturity model is being developed for SMEs to measure and assess the quality of their busi-ness processes. This enables the companies to determine their existing status, and to take the necessary ac-tions for the competence development of their business processes, which should contribute to the attainment of their knowledge management goals.

XML-BASED COURSE MATERIAL TRANSFORMATIONS FOR UBIQUITOUS ELEARNING APPLICATIONS

Authors:

Timothy Arndt

Abstract: This paper describes our work in progress on ubiquitous eLearning. Today’s learners are increasingly likely to engage in learning activities “on the fly” (while commuting, between other activities, on work breaks, etc.) than to use long, concentrated work sessions to learn course material. In order to meet the needs of these learners, a ubiquitous approach to web-based eLearning is required. This approach supports not just the traditional eLearning of a learner using a fixed PC to study, but extends this to learners studying in open labs/libraries/friends’ PCs as well as on non-traditional devices such as handheld PCs, PDAs, iPods, cell phones and the like. An adaptive approach is required to deliver courseware in such a situation. The eLearning system must adapt to the learner’s particular likes/dislikes, study session length, and learning style as well as to the characteristics of the learning device – screen size, bandwidth, networked or not, etc. We propose an XML-based approach in which metadata describing the learner’s situation are continuously collected and refined and may be transformed via XSLT to meet the learner’s needs at any particular moment.

Personalcasting: Personalization on datacasting

Authors:

Roberto D. Ribeiro do Amaral, Carlos Gonçalves and Francisco Cercas

Abstract: Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) allows the simultaneous transmission of different digital contents with the video signal, i.e. datacasting. This become possible due to coding and compression technologies used to process the signal, not previously available with analogue technology. This subject created the discussion about the digital dividend, which addresses the best way to use the spectrum, so as to improve its efficiency. This article presents the concept of Personalcasting applied to data, which is sent simultaneously by DTT to the entire coverage area, while directing contents to specific users. This provides a better use of the DTT spectrum, due to high data volume that will be used with datacasting

Authors:

Ana Azevedo and Manuel Santos

Abstract: Business Intelligence (BI) is one emergent area of the Decision Support Systems (DSS) discipline. Over the last years the evolution in this area has been considerable. An overview of some aspects of the area is presented in this article. The roots of BI and its usual associations with Knowledge Management Systems (KMS), Competitive Intelligence (CI), and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are introduced. From the literature review, it was observed that the definition of an underlying structure on the area is missing. Therefore, a framework for BI is defined. The state of the art of BI research field was made, presenting recent trends and open issues for research.

BEST USE OF KNOWLEDGE IN A SPACE PROGRAM :Managing the correlated technologies

Authors:

Miriam B. Alves and Ana M. Freitas de Morais

Abstract: This paper presents an ongoing work being developed at the Institute of Aeronautics and Space (IAE) to provide a process and a system to support the knowledge management of new technologies applied in the conception and development of the Brazilian Satellite Launcher Program. This management is not only necessary to organize the actual research efforts but also to identify communalities and necessities for strategic planning of future research projects and development activities. The results of the research projects are usually new technologies that ought to be employed in the development of the Launcher Program. The proposed knowledge management system will not only allow the assessment of these new technologies but will also help in the definition and planning of the research topics in each important area of this multidisciplinary program, according to the Institute strategic goals and space mission.

KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT IMPLEMENTATION METHODOLOGY: Towards a Practical Approach

Authors:

Daniel Serrano and Renata Araujo

Abstract: Different perspectives from different areas contribute to the consolidation of the knowledge management research area. However, due to its underdeveloped aspect, the KM model and systematics for KM implementation found in the literature are still being discussed and there is still a gap between theoretical frameworks and technological implementation. The lack of a systematics for KM implementation may be due to the use of reductionist disciplines which do not take into consideration that KM complexity requires an integrative and holistic approach. The objective of this research work is to propose a methodology for KM implementation, comprising a KM holistic model and a systematics for knowledge management implementation to help an organization define its technological requirements.

IMPROVING SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT IN SME THROUGH KNOWLEDGE SHARING: A PRACTICAL APPROACH

Authors:

Sanae Saadaoui and Frédéric F. Monfils

Abstract: To be competitive on a global market and especially in software development and software delivery, SME (Small and Medium-sized Enterprise) should capitalize on their internal know-how. Knowledge management should be present in any software process improvement in order to capitalize on past experiences and existing good practices instead of introducing a completely new way of working. Unfortunately, most knowledge management techniques are targeted towards big companies because they require a large amount of resources both in time, money and people involved in the process. In this paper, we present preliminary results of an experiment made with a set of SME developing and delivering software products. In this experiment, we helped these companies improving the management of their knowledge by providing them with lightweight knowledge management techniques, adapted to their size and their context.

Authors:

Marc Frappier and Philippe Michelin

Abstract: In this paper, we show the importance of building precise models of key concepts before conducting strategic information technology improvement and innovation. We use the notions of distinction and definition to build precise models. Our modelling approach mixes both natural language and mathematical definitions, to reach the appropriate level of precision. This modelling approach constitutes a form of knowledge management similar to approaches like enterprise architecture, but conducted in a more agile style.

Abstract: Organizing documents and performing search is a common but not a trivial task in information systems. With the increasing number of documents, it is becoming crucial to automate these processes. Clustering is a solution for organizing large amount of documents. In this article we propose a method of improving document retrieval that was implemented in RKB Knowledge Base. Our method heavily relies on linguistic analysis, which aims to identify document specific noun phrases. We apply an adjusted hierarchical clustering algorithm for learning clusters of documents.

AN UPPER ONTOLOGY FOR ENTERPRISE PROCESS MODELLING

Authors:

Aikaterini M. Sourouni, George Kourlimpinis, John Psarras and Dimitris Askounis

Abstract: During last decades great expectations have been placed on Enterprise Modelling and Integration through ontologies. However, most of the existing proposals concentrate on an extensive set of enterprise concepts and definitions, making difficult for ontology engineers to distinguish only those of their interest. In this regard, this paper presents an approach towards a standard abstract framework for constructing Enterprise ontologies. The main aim of this approach is constructing an upper-level Ontology incorporating generic enterprise concepts and relations. The proposed ontology aims at becoming a starting point rather than being a predefined solution. Starting with this upper Ontology, business analysts can adapt and enhance in order to model enterprises of any type and sector.

Perspectives on Usage of Agents in Personal Knowledge Management

Authors:

Kaspars Osis and Janis Grundspenkis

Abstract: It is frequently mentioned that nowadays is the information age. Knowledge becomes the most important asset for individuals and organizations. And more increasingly knowledge has been viewed as an active area of research. Accordingly there is a need for highly qualified knowledge workers. That in turn implies a necessity for on an effective technology based education system, which provides a foundation for obtaining well educated specialists. Thus perspectives of personal knowledge management (PKM) environment are explored in this context. This environment is not just focused on an individual. Rather it is involving also collaboration for knowledge exchange thus forming communities of practice. The central concept of the paper is knowledge worker surrounded by several layers of agents such as personal agents, communication agents and so called “engine room” agents like database and network agents. The next step related to different types of agents would be to consider that all or part of them could be mobile agents. Possible future opportunities for PKM are explored in this respect and potential benefiting parties are identified.
